overdraft fees are a wake up call — you didn’t keep full records of your check writing and so you spent more than you had in the bank.

Since you’re a college student, you almost certainly have access to a spreadsheet. use it to make up a check register

then reorganize it into categories [across] by months [down]. with a bit of work, you can then flesh out a fairly complete budget for the year.

if it isn’t in the budget — don’t buy it. Then you won’t write a check for it and you won’t have overdraft fees.

which bank? virtually all of the larger ones have free online banking these days. savings, checking and debit card are standard items.

so go shopping for a bank. it’s no big deal.

Online banking is offered free of cost by banks.
There will be annual fee for your debit cards. It may be free for the first year only.
For cheque books also there will be fees. Banks issue one or two cheque books free per year.
You cannot avoid overdraft fees.
